Based in Seoul, Haneul Lee studied photography at Kyungil University and Hongik University. Focusing on the perceptual shifts of contemporary individuals accustomed to digital media—who often view real people as virtual images—she continuously challenges familiar frames that define others and our era through photography.
Her work captures the personal narratives of unfamiliar strangers and middle-aged men, reinterprets 1990s generational fantasies through a contemporary lens, and most recently traces the resilient vitality of life continuing within the complex geopolitical boundaries of Okinawa. Furthermore, she expands her photographic practice into publications, multi-dimensionally documenting both the temporal experience of exhibitions and the thought processes behind her work. Moving beyond mere imagery, her practice poses humanistic questions about how we perceive and remember others.
She has been selected for and recognized by prominent national and international programs, including the Museum Hanmi MH Talent Portfolio, the Kuala Lumpur International Photo Awards, the Singapore International Photography Festival, and IMA Next. Her work has been showcased at the Daegu Photo Biennale and in a solo exhibition at The Reference following her selection for the Open PT Program. She is also the author of Decades No.2, published by AKAAKA.
